WHAT IS THE A+ SCHOOLS PROGRAM?

Since 2001, Marceline High School graduates able and willing to complete program requirements (listed below) have had the option to receive A+ designation upon graduation, providing two years of tuition at any public community college, vocational, or technical school in the state of Missouri. Students have the option to utilize A+ funds for four years following high school graduation.

The A+ Schools program is a school-improvement initiative established by the Outstanding Schools Act of 1993 with these general goals:

  • Reduce the high school dropout rate,

  • Improve career paths for all students, eliminating general track coursework,

  • Improve contact between the schools and local businesses, as well as with postsecondary institutions.

WHAT ARE THE A+ PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS?

Students must meet the following requirements in order to earn A+ designation:

  • Attend an A+ designated high school for three consecutive years prior to graduation,

  • Maintain a 95% attendance rate (as calculated by the official attendance record of the high school office),

  • Maintain a 2.5 grade point average on a 4 point scale,

  • Maintain a record of good citizenship as stated in the A+ Citizenship Policy, and

  • Complete 50 hours of supervised, unpaid tutoring or mentoring.

HOW DO I ENROLL IN THE A+ PROGRAM?

Attend the annual A+ Sign-Up meeting or visit the A+ Office to receive a packet of information, including the A+ Agreement, which must be signed and on file prior to the start of tutoring.

WHAT TUTORING OPPORTUNITIES DOES MARCELINE OFFER?

It is important to note that all tutoring must be preapproved through the A+ Office. After signing up, students will receive a signed log sheet they must present to the supervising teacher each time they tutor.

  1. After-school tutoring occurs in both buildings on campus each Tuesday and Thursday following the regular school day. Special tutoring opportunities exist before school as well.

  2. During the school day, students enrolled in cadet teaching and study hall can arrange to complete tutoring hours during those classes.

  3. Summer opportunities include summer school in June, offering morning and afternoon hours. Safety Town, a summer program for entering kindergarteners, provides opportunity for tutoring and mentoring hours as well.
